KP Judicial Academy Hosts Workshop on Refugee Law and Child Protection for Judicial Officers (June 3, 2025)

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Judicial Academy (KPJA), in collaboration with the Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid (SHARP), hosted a one-day workshop focused on the legal status of refugees and child protection issues in the context of displacement. The event brought together 25 judicial officers from across the province to deepen their understanding of national and international legal frameworks governing refugee rights and the special protection needs of vulnerable children.
The workshop commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome note by Mr. Jehanzeb Shinwari, Director General KPJA, and participant introductions facilitated by SHARP. Expert-led sessions were delivered by representatives from UNHCR, the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees (CAR), and KPJA.
Key topics included the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, legal protections available to Afghan refugees in Pakistan, identity documentation procedures, and the Tripartite Agreement under the Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR). CAR officials presented an overview of government policies and recent notifications related to refugee management.
The second half of the workshop focused on child protection laws, including the Child Protection Act 2010, the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018, and relevant sections of the Foreigners Act—with particular emphasis on the challenges faced by displaced and refugee children.
The event concluded with an open discussion, distribution of certificates, a group photo, and the presentation of souvenirs to guests. This initiative reflects KPJA’s ongoing commitment to building the judiciary’s capacity to respond effectively to humanitarian and legal challenges within the justice system.
